Why I am so passionate about the CakeforCake movement.
One of my favourite quotes is from Oprah - "The more you praise and celebrate life, the more there is in life to celebrate".
Why do I love it so much? It’s such a positive thought to take away.
I have always been a firm believer in, no matter how difficult life gets and no matter how many times you fail, there is always strength in all of us that guides us through the hard times.
If we choose to grab the opportunities thrown at us, every moment becomes a celebration.
Life does not happen TO you; life happens FOR you.
I should probably introduce myself first. With a background in petroleum engineering and working in the Oilfield Industry for the past 15 years, I have been fortunate to travel across different continents and inevitably meet amazing people from diverse backgrounds.
This journey wasn’t an easy one.
It started in 1978, with my father pursuing his dream to move to Mumbai where he could support his family and proudly retire.
When I was born in 1982, we lived a modest life with our families close by. Despite our humble beginnings, my father taught me three very powerful things. I can practically hear his voice as I recall his words which were the following:
- Believe in Yourself.
- Be honest in all that you do.
- Treat everyone with dignity and respect.
He has always been my hero and will continue to be so.
One day the CEO of our Company was visiting Abu Dhabi and staying at a 5-Star hotel.
He shared with me, his pleasant experience at that hotel and told me how they surprised him with a Birthday cake in his room. This hotel went the extra mile by noticing the guests birth date at the time of his check-in. It happened to be that very day. They took this opportunity to go above and beyond the usual customer service by delivering a surprise cake to his room.
Voila! Happy Customer! And on that particular day a very happy Boss too! :)) Till date, I've heard him recommend this Hotel to all his family and friends. Needless to say, he's a loyal customer!
During my 15-year tenure, in the Oilfield Industry, I worked with labourers who came from unostentatious backgrounds. They earned a paltry sum despite giving their blood, sweat and tears. Their ultimate aim, to send all their earnings back home to their families. Their families were never with them to share meaningful moments in their lives. This would always pull at my heart strings.
This Hotel room experience got me thinking and I had an instant light bulb moment!!
Why not expand on this Cake giving idea!?
The rest is history, in April 2016 "CakeforCake" was born.
We’ve celebrated over 150 birthdays to date and our vision is to celebrate many more in the city.
The CakeforCake initiative is available to everyone around the world. If you have your family, friends or colleagues living in Abu Dhabi, you have a chance to surprise them by ordering through Celebrating Life Bakery and in turn we will surprise someone less fortunate by giving a cake on their birthday.
I'd like to end with this quote -
"Kindness is the language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see"
Lets get together and celebrate!
